The All Progressives Congress, Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, has called on the Senator representing Anambra Central, Victor Umeh to stop deceiving his constituents by embarking on a phony scholarship programme.
This was made in a press statement released by the publicity secretary of the party in the zone, Igboeli Arinze.
Arinze described the scholarship programme as phony, wondering why the Senator was packaging such an event six months to the general elections accusing Umeh of using funds meant for constituency projects within the senatorial zone for such a venture which only favours his cronies and supporters alone.
” We as a party of the people were again amused by the noisome display of administrative vulgarity in the case of claims by Senator Victor Umeh to granting scholarship to indigent youths and students.
Naturally, we ought to have ignored the insult on the sensibilities of the people of Anambra Central but because we owe it as a duty to inform our people in such cases we have chosen to do so.
Yes, scholarships are good but when one times such scholarship offers a few months to the general elections as well as the fact that such funds might have been sourced from constituency funds meant for the district is being used to maintain political structures by awarding it to children of his supporters then we shall question the process.
Let us ask, how were the beneficiaries of this scheme selected? Did Umeh reach out to the indigent in the zone or did he select the privileged few owing to their loyalty to his political cause? Again, is this not a vagrant abuse of power? Umeh’s political associates are well off by all societal standards, why then deprive the children and wards who are in dire need of this scholarship?
Perhaps, Senator Umeh is seeking penance for his role as APGA Chairman for over ten years, where his party sent a number of indigent students out of school by increasing their fees then by over 500%, a move that turned a number of students into drop outs and okada riders, if that then is the case, he should do it properly by reaching out to the poor and not the children of his cronies.”
